JD-Advantage Career Table Talk

JD-advantage legal careers are a rapidly growing segment of the legal job market. These positions, defined as law-related careers where a law degree is not required, but is nevertheless a considerable asset, have more than doubled in the legal marketplace since 2005. Many seasoned as well as new attorneys are successfully making the transition into rewarding JD-advantage careers where their law degrees and legal training are highly valued and relied upon.

Law-related positions are found in every employment sector and virtually every industry and economic endeavor—corporations, trade associations, professional associations, every level of government, advocacy organizations, foundations, colleges and universities, accounting firms, hospitals, museums, even law firms. To get a sense of the industries and job titles represented in this ever-growing segment of the legal job market, review this well-researched article, 600+ Things You Can Do with a Law Degree (Other Than Practice Law).

The University of Houston Law Center (UHLC) has decided to capitalize on this growing trend and establish a recruiting event specifically geared towards these non-traditional, law-related employment opportunities. The JD-Advantage Career Table Talk (JDATT) invites employers to campus to speak to UHLC students and recent graduates about their organization and the opportunities they have for law students or graduates looking to embark on a non-traditional legal career. Culminating after a series of career panels discussing how former practicing attorneys made the transition into a JD-advantage  career, the JDATT takes place in a common area, where employers are able to share information about their organization and employment opportunities.

This event provides employers the opportunity to meet informally with students and recent graduates, collect resumes for upcoming positions, and introduce their organization to a large number of potential candidates.  Additionally, the event is an opportunity to expose UHLC students to the varied opportunities available in the JD-advantage career marketplace.

Who Can Participate in JD-Advantage Career Table Talk?

The JDATT is open to all current UHLC 2L and 3L students as well as recent graduates. Students and recent graduates attending this event are interested in learning more about your industry and the types of non-traditional, law-related roles usually found in it. Additionally, students and recent graduates will be looking to network with other JD-advantage career practitioners and, where opportunities are available, secure permanent or internship positions.

Participating employers should specify their available employment opportunities on their completed employer registration here.

Below are the pertinent details for this year's JDATT:

  • What: JD-Advantage Career Table Talk
  • When: Friday, October 18, 2019 (Register by October 4, 2019)
  • Time: 11:00 am – 2:00 pm
  • Where: UH Law Center Commons
  • Cost: FREE!
  • Format: Students/graduates come to the table talk dressed in business attire and equipped with requested application materials.  Employer representatives are placed at tables designated by the organization's name and students/graduates freely move among tables speaking with the representatives about their organization and industry.

After the JDATT, employers can follow up with students/graduates in any way that they see fit—from simply informing a student/graduate that they were impressed with their credentials and will keep their resume on file if a need in their office ever arises to offering a student/graduate a formal interview or offer for a current or upcoming position. The Career Development Office can provide interview space for employers to conduct formal interviews after the JDATT.

If your organization would like to join us for the JDATT, please complete the brief employer registration by October 18, 2019. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kourtney James at 713-743-5622 or kljames3@central.uh.edu.
