"The Law Center provided me with the opportunity to work for one of the traditional Houston law firms." Read more
The Law Center provided me with the opportunity to work for one of the traditional Houston law firms. As a UHLC student, I was provided an opportunity to interview with Fulbright & Jaworski (now Norton Rose Fulbright) for a summer associate position. I joined Fulbright in 1990 and with so many UHLC alumni at the firm, I enjoyed an instant network of associates and partners who were invested in my success. Having spent 33 years with the firm and recently being re-elected to serve as Managing Partner, I think UHLC had an extremely important role in starting my career on the right path.

UH Law Center provided me a priceless education and allowed me to establish lifelong friendships with classmates, other law alumni, and faculty. It enabled me to grow personally and professionally, and it provided opportunities and privileges to me that I could not have otherwise had. UH Law Center has honored and respected me beyond any reasonable expectations as a student, alumnus, and attorney. "Gratitude. The UHLC set the course for the entire rest of my life." Read more
Gratitude. The UHLC set the course for the entire rest of my life. I am grateful for the education I received, experiences I had, and the professors and classmates I got to know who became life long friends. I met my husband in law school, we’ll celebrate our 40th anniversary in 2024. I received an excellent legal education that honed my skills in critical thinking, close reading, and advocating persuasively. My entire career as a bankruptcy lawyer resulted from the spark of interest in that area of law lit by then professor and now Senator, Elizabeth Warren. Giving back is a way to express my gratitude and show my appreciation for the opportunities law school gave me.

"I give back to the University of Houston Law Center to express my gratitude..." Read more
I give back to the University of Houston Law Center to express my gratitude for the opportunities I received as a direct result of the excellent legal education I obtained at UH Law Center. My legal career was built on the mentorship I received from several professors and deans during law school and the lifelong friendships I have made with students and alumni. My life and my family’s lives were forever changed when I was admitted to the University of Houston Law Center. The Law Center took a chance on this non-traditional student – a wife and mother of six young children – and for that, I will be forever grateful. Phillip and I hope that this gift will help provide others with the same opportunities for a successful legal career that I have been blessed with.

"I wanted to be a lawyer from a very early age." Read more
I wanted to be a lawyer from a very early age. I was given that opportunity by the Law Center (albeit late in the summer, off the wait list!). I enjoyed everything about law school. Our professors were excellent and instructed with passion. They were and are scholars. I have gotten to know all the Deans and Assistant Deans over nearly 40 years I have been associated with our institution, and they all brought different, diverse, and always positive energy. The Law School helped me land my first job (I stayed for 35 years), and connected me to the broader legal, judicial and business communities. The school gave me much exposure and opportunity. It continues to provide opportunity, education, and perspective for many through the numerous programs it sponsors. Why wouldn't that drive me to support the school? I could never repay the value received, but the Deans Society is a meaningful way to express thanks and to lead others to reflect on how the school has helped them. Things would have been much different had I remained on the waitlist.

I received an outstanding education from the Law Center that was an excellent value. The law was a second career for me, and I feel lucky that the Law Center was my "home town" law school. Houston is an exciting and vibrant city with a strong legal market--it deserves to have a nationally recognized law school. Giving back to the Law Center is one way that I can help promote its mission, benefit Houston, and allow others to enjoy the opportunities that the Law Center provided me.

I received a first-class education at the Law Center. The classes were small enough that all my professors knew me and vice versa. If I had an unanswered question, I could approach the professor and get the answer. "UHLC continues to amaze me." Read more
UHLC continues to amaze me. UHLC gave me a strong foundation in health law that has enabled me to have an amazing career spanning from work as an attorney representing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, CMS, to a top tier international law firm, to Vice Presidency at a Fortune 100 corporation, and now as a Regional Counsel, Vice President, and Assistant Corporate Secretary in the largest integrated health care system in the US. I'm forever grateful for the wonderful teaching and enrichment of all my UHLC professors. Now, the new UHLC building, excellent legal scholarship and teaching demonstrated by continued top 10 national ranking of the health law program, intellectual property other programs, and Dean Baynes's courageous leadership to expand opportunities for diverse and first-generation law students are jewels in the UHLC crown. This inspires me to give back to UHLC.

UHLC gave me an excellent legal education but also showed me other skills necessary to be a good attorney and serve my clients well. I learned (1) to ask enough questions to understand what a client really needed versus what they wanted thought they needed; (2) how to handle and defuse the emotions that a client often has with respect to the matter they are seeking legal advice regarding; and (3) to help the client understand that negotiating an agreement between parties often worked better for both parties than filing a lawsuit.

I was part of the first class to enter the new Bates College of Law building in 1969. I have such great memories of classmates, professors who became friends, the administration and the group that made up Board Nine of the Houston Law Review. The quality of my education, both intellectual and collegial, was excellent. It gave me the basis and grounding that served me throughout my career. With some pride, I have watched UHLC grow in quality and reputation over the years since my graduation. I continue to support UHLC in providing to a broad and diverse student body the same high level of education and preparation that I had.
