Oct. 11, 2023 — University of Houston Law Center alumna and McDowell Hetherington partner Jennifer H. Chung (J.D. ‘13) has established a scholarship in her name for underrepresented women who are also mothers and pursuing legal education at UHLC.
“Law school is hard, and the legal profession is demanding. We should support each other where we can," Chung said.
Chung said she was motivated to give back when she heard firsthand accounts of how scholarships were impacting and enabling law school students.
“To me it was inspiring, and I wanted to do what I could to recognize the tremendous legal education I received through the Law Center and ensure that others had access to the same opportunities. I also wanted to empower mothers who make many sacrifices to balance a career and a family,” Chung said.
Chung, who majored in political science for her undergraduate degree, viewed law school as the natural progression of her academic journey. However, she took time off between college and law school to work and save money, eventually paying for her legal education herself.
“The value that a legal education provides is immeasurable,” Chung said, crediting UH Law Center for her career success and highlighting the cost-effectiveness, the opportunities provided by the school and local community, and the strength of the Houston legal market. For current students, she recommends the Moot Court program, which helps develop skills in advocacy, public speaking, legal research, and writing.
Chung is an adjunct faculty member at UH Law Center and has taught courses on legal negotiations, depositions, and professional development. She also contributes to the UH Law Center through various leadership roles; she serves as a director for the University of Houston Law Foundation and is on the steering committee for the Women of the Law alumni group.
For fellow alumni, current students, and potential donors, Chung offered this message, "When we first emerge from law school, our focus is understandably on learning the practice. But as we gain experience and progress in our careers, we should take time to reflect on the experiences we’ve had along the way and do our part to help the next generation of lawyers who will continue to move our profession forward.”
