Susan Bickley ‘84
Nov. 4, 2019 — University of Houston Law Center graduate Susan Bickley ‘84 has won a 2019 Women Who Mean Business Award from the Houston Business Journal.
“I am very honored and excited to have been recognized,” Bickley said. “My law firm, Blank Rome LLP, generously nominated me for the award.”
A gala was held to honor the spotlighted women, all of whom were named outstanding business leaders in fields such as finance, health care and real estate, among others.
“That night I especially enjoyed hearing about the backgrounds and contributions of the other women award winners, which underscored for me the essential and growing role that women hold among Houston’s business leadership and in all areas of its economy,” she said. “Frankly, it was humbling to be recognized together with these other women leaders.”
In March 2019, Bickley received the UH Law Center President’s Award in honor of her commitment to Law Center initiatives and programs.
“That I received the President’s Award was a real surprise to me given how many wonderful Law Center alumni work for the benefit of the UH Law Center’s students and faculty,” she said.
Bickley is grateful to the Law Center for more than providing the legal education that bolstered her career. Professional relationships, an alumni network and her involvement with the school have been major parts of her life and career since she graduated.
“Frankly, it does not feel that it was that long ago that I was a slightly overwhelmed and bewildered first-year student myself,” Bickley said. “I am glad that the Law Center not only has been there for me during school, but throughout my career.”
Compelled to give back to the school that built the foundation of her career, Bickley regularly devotes time and resources to the Law Center.
“Judging a moot court or mock trial competition, mentoring a student, working on the Law Center Gala, raising money for the new building, participating in on-campus recruiting, speaking to a class, working on a conference sponsored by the Law Center or serving on the UH Law Alumni Board and UH Law Foundation Board all have only served to enrich my life, make it more interesting and give it more meaning.
“To be honest, I also do it because it is fun and energizing to be involved in a small way in the life of a wonderful institution, and be a part of its continuing development. I’d recommend it to anyone, because you get back more than you give.”
