March 28, 2019 — Alex B. Roberts was recently named co-recipient of the 2019 Outstanding Law Review Article Award from the Texas Bar Foundation. Roberts is a 2006 alumnus of the University of Houston Law Center and a partner at Beck Redden.

He co-wrote the article, "Legal Malpractice in Texas" with his colleague and mentor David Beck, also a partner at Beck Redden. It was published in the Baylor Law Review.

"To be recognized by an organization that does so much to improve the system of justice in the State of Texas is incredibly humbling," Roberts said. "The Texas Bar Foundation is the nation’s largest charitably funded bar foundation.

"The Foundation has changed the lives of countless Texans through its grant program and works tirelessly to promote the rule of law. The Foundation’s Fellows are the giants of our profession."

The article is meant to help attorneys who do not have access to mentors or similar professional resources. Roberts said many mistakes that lawyers make can be easily avoided, and that he and Beck wanted to raise awareness among attorneys of the responsibilities and duties that govern the legal profession to ensure that all clients are served by competent and diligent counsel.

"Nearly half of the lawyers in Texas practice at firms of five or fewer lawyers," Roberts said. "Studies show that attorneys at solo or small firms are at a significantly greater risk of being a target of malpractice claims.  But all lawyers can benefit from being informed and mindful of their responsibilities.

"David has been a go-to lawyer for professional liability defense matters for many years. I have had the great fortune to handle many of these cases with him. The attorneys we defend in these matters are fighting for their professional reputations as much as anything. We hope that this article will help many lawyers avoid such situations and, by extension, improve the reputation of our profession."

Roberts and Beck will be recognized for their work at the Texas Bar Foundation Annual Dinner on June 14 at the JW Marriott in Austin.
