Department of Homeland Security cites UH Law Center alum Cantu '94

Nov. 4, 2016 – University of Houston Law Center alumnus Carlos O. Cantu '94 was recognized last week by top officials in the Department of Homeland Security who presented him with the Secretary's Meritorious Service Medal in an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Cantu is a general attorney for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office and is based in Chula Vista, Calif. The award was presented to him by Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson and Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

"I'm honored to receive this award," Cantú said. "I want to thank Secretary Johnson and Deputy Secretary Mayorkas for the recognition."

The Secretary's Meritorious Service Medal is given to an individual for outstanding leadership and service. The Department of Homeland Security said Cantu won the accolade for his, "outstanding work on a class action lawsuit resulting in a favorable outcome and legal victory for CBP against allegations of coercion by U.S."
