Organization Profile
The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) is an international organization located in Montreal, Canada. The CEC was created by Canada, Mexico, and the United States under the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC), which complements the environmental provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The CEC was established to address regional environmental concerns, help prevent potential trade and environmental conflicts, and to promote the effective enforcement of environmental law in North America. NAAEC Articles 14 and 15 include procedures allowing any NGO residing or established in the territory of Canada, Mexico, or the US to make submissions to the CEC Secretariat asserting that a Party to the NAAEC is failing to effectively enforce its environmental law. The CEC has published Guidelines for Submissions on Enforcement Matters explaining these procedures.
Duties
The CEC is offering an internship for assignment to the CEC’s Submissions on Enforcement Matters (SEM) Unit. The candidates must have completed substantive coursework in international and/or Mexican environmental law. Successful candidates will have good writing and legal research skills. The candidates should be able to work both autonomously and with an international legal team. The candidates should demonstrate their ability to adapt to cultural diversity. Ability to combine legal research skills with computer application tools is a valuable asset. The selected candidate will be responsible for compiling information concerning ongoing submissions on enforcement matters under NAAEC Articles 14 and 15 and participate with the SEM Unit in development of internal policies and procedures.

Required Language
English will be the main working language, while knowledge of Spanish and/or French is advantageous.
Specific Requirements
The successful candidates are currently studying law at a law program in Canada, Mexico or the United States or are interested in environmental and/or international law.
