Lauren Simpson

Lawyering Skills and Strategies
Professor Simpson earned her B.A. in French and International Studies (cum laude) at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1988. She is a proud graduate of the University of Houston Law Center (J.D. ’94, cum laude). After practicing in civil litigation, she transitioned to the First Court of Appeals of Texas in early 1997, serving as a staff attorney there for over 13 years. Professor Simpson eagerly accepted a faculty position at the Law Center in 2010 and is now a Clinical Associate Professor teaching Lawyering Skills and Strategies. She has been honored with two university-wide awards: an individual University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award (Instructor/Clinical category) in spring 2016, and a University of Houston Group Teaching Excellence Award in 2023, given to the Lawyering Skills and Strategies faculty in recognition of their commitment to teaching and student success. Additionally, she was one of three AALS Teachers of the Year selected by the Law Center, and she has been voted Student Bar Association Professor of the Year for Law Center faculty teaching in the part-time program seven times (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025). The Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) has twice awarded her its Outstanding Service Award for her work on the ALWD By-Laws Committee (2018-19 and 2021-2022).
