April 15, 2026 - Representatives and recruiters from more than 40 employers arrived at the University of Houston Law Center recently to meet law students at the annual Spring Small & Midsize Firm Open House. UHLC’s Career Development Office organized the event to help students learn about internships and employment opportunities.
“The informal recruiting event offers students a unique opportunity to connect face-to-face with potential employers and explore a wide range of career options,” said CDO’s Director of Employee Relations and Development Chandria T. Jackson (J.D. ’05).
The event brought law firms with 50 or fewer attorneys to campus to connect with students seeking schoolterm, summer, and postgraduate employment. Participating law firms represented a wide range of practice areas, including intellectual property litigation, estate planning, family law, and banking.
The open house gave students a chance to discuss career goals and explore different legal careers. And it allowed employers to meet prospective hires and identify candidates whose career interests and skills aligned with their practice areas.
“I know that UH produces solid candidates, because I've been here,” said alum and employer Steven C. Earl (J.D.’97), who has attended the open house event five times prior. “We do well with UH students. They perform well at the job, they're happy at the job, and it's the best reason to keep coming back.”
Katelynn Scott (3L), a parttime program student and employer representative, reflects on the event from both perspectives.
“I came to school here because of the part-time program. I've been working full-time for the firm now,” she said, recruiting for G. Ortega Law, PLLC. “I'm coming back here just to try and get more UH students, UH is a pretty successful law school, so recruiting here is always good.”
Students attending the open house agreed that the event helped open doors.
“This is one of the few events that offers opportunities that allow you to get half summers so you can get more experience and develop in specific areas that you wouldn't elsewise be able to get for the full summer,” said student Sara Meawad (1L). “The CDO really encouraged me to come here, this is one of the great opportunities where you can get to meet multiple employers at once and get exposed to a lot of opportunities that are out there.”
Hosted every semester, the CDO has been the behind-the-scenes player for the students of UHLC, connecting them with employers across the city.
“There's the opportunity to talk specifically about open positions, but also we welcome opportunities to network, to identify people who could serve as potential mentors or to help expand your network to other members of their community,” said Associate Director for Career Development Ashley Scott.
The CDO's upcoming events include the Summer Resume Collect in June and OCI: Session I in July.
