May 9, 2024 — Law students learned about the intricacies of litigation from practicing attorneys during the “Disputes Over Dinner: A Litigation Learning Event” organized by the Career Development Office (CDO) at the University of Houston Law Center.
Katie Tipper-McWhorter (J.D. ’12), Senior Counsel at Yetter Coleman LLP, moderated the panel of UHLC alumni litigators. Joining Tipper-McWhorter for the spring semester CDO event were Ibrahim Khawaja (J.D. ’04), Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office, Carlos Ruiz (J.D. ’18), Heim, Payne & Chorush LLP, Maryann Zaki (J.D. ’13), Zaki Law PLLC and Josh Redelman (J.D. ’16), Clark Hill PLC.
The panel boasted an array of legal backgrounds, reflecting the multifaceted nature of litigation working in solo practice, commercial law firm, boutique law firm and the public sector.
Panelists engaged with the students, sharing anecdotes from their law career journeys, discussing strategies for navigating a litigation practice, and emphasizing the importance of mental well-being in a demanding profession.

Following the panel discussion, students dined and engaged in more in-depth discussions with lawyers who practice in specialty areas ranging from complex commercial litigation, construction law, and personal injury to fiduciary disputes, appellate law, and oil & gas-related litigation.
