Professor(s):
Credits: 3
Course Areas: Energy, Natural Resources and Environmental Law
Time: Location:
Course Outline: The Energy Law and Policy seminar requires a thesis-length (50 pages) paper for LLM students in the EENR program and a 35-page paper for JDs (satisfying the Senior Writing Requirement) or non-thesis LLMs. Students may choose a topic on any issue related to energy, resources and the environment and are expected to have a topic in mind, motivated by their own career or intellectual interest. The professor will help tailor the topic into a manageable issue. The seminar requires that students submit key stages of the research on a defined timetable of deadlines for topic selection, bibliography, outline, first draft, class presentation, and final paper. The class meets weekly and focuses on research techniques in the first weeks. Class readings cover general energy issues of the day, but are kept light so that students can focus on their research topic. 3 credit hours. See prerequisites below.

Course Notes: Q=12 “The seminar is limited to 12 students. Derrick Gabriel in Student Services will keep a list of approved students. Priority is given to students who entered as LLMs in EENR when the thesis was required for the LLM. Now that the thesis is optional, the EENR LLMs who still want to write a thesis are given priority. (Some countries do not recognize a masters degree with out a thesis.) Students who entered as EENR certificate students and JDs may enroll through the regular registration process if there are seats open after the priority registration. Students must have approval of Prof. Weaver who will then send their names to Derrick.”
Prerequisites: Yes “At least two prior EENR courses and the permission of Prof. Weaver. Students writing a thesis should contact Prof. Weaver with their proposed topic area when seeking approval to take the course.”
