First Day Assignments: 1. The use of computers or other electronics during my PR class is prohibited. Therefore, if you want to use your computer or other electronic note-taking device during class time, this is not the class for you (unless, of course, you are in need of reasonable accommodation pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act). If you just cannot live without your computer during class time, please drop this course and register for one of the other PR offerings (The two other courses taught by Prof. Schuwerk and Prof. Marrus will be held at the exact same time and days as this course. I do not know whether there are restrictions on computer use in their classes.).

2. I expect you to be prepared for each and every class by reading the assigned materials before our class meeting. I will call on students at random throughout the semester. If you do not like such a policy, this again is not the course for you.

3. The first day class assignment is to read pp. 1-24 in the Hazard casebook (The Law and Ethics of Lawyering, 5th edition). You are also to skim the Model Rules of Professional Conduct in their entirety to become familiar with them. You will then need to re-read more carefully Model Rules of Professional Conduct 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 2.1, 3.3, 4.1, and 5.4 and their corresponding comments.

4. My webpage is located at This course's webpage will be updated over the next few days, and at that time you will be able to download the course syllabus, reading assignments, and access other important announcements by clicking on the PR course button on the right side of my homepage.

5. The required texts for this course are (a) Hazard, The Law and Ethics of Lawyering (5th edition, 2010); (b) Seigel and Kelley, Lawyers Crossing Lines: Ten Stories (2nd ed. 2010); and (c) any current copy of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. The first two texts should be currently available at the bookstore (if not, please let me know right away). Regarding the Model Rules, any current copy of the Model Rules will be fine, as long as they are up-to-date and contain the corresponding Rule's comments. There are several fine supplements that contain the Model Rules (at least one of which should be available at the bookstore), or you can even download a copy from the Internet for free, if that is your preference.
