Course Outline: This course provides an introduction to the civil adjudicative process, primarily that of the federal courts, including jurisdiction, pleading, dispositive motions, discovery, and trial procedure.

First Day Assignments: Assignment for first day: Obtain the casebook, the casebook supplement, and the photocopied materials from the Copy Center. The photocopied materials contain the syllabus of readings, which are arranged by classes, and the following assignments are simply statements of what is in the syllabus for the first two classes. Please learn to use the syllabus to obtain upcoming assignments for reading.
For the first meeting: Read casebook pp.1-12 and consider the problems contained in these pages. (Notice that the answers are in the book at 12-13, so that you can check your understanding.) Then, read 28 U.S.C. 1332 (in casebook supplement) and U.S. Constitution Art. III 2 (also in supplement). Then, read casebook pp.14-18, through the end of 1.03. Finally read the note on the Federal Rules at page 19.
Assignment for second meeting: Read photocopied handout p.5 (3 complaints). Then, read Federal Rules of Civil Procedure ("FRCP") 8(a), 8(d)(1) (in supplement); then read casebook pp.19-30, through end of 1.04. Next, read FRCP 26(b)(1)-(2) (supplement); then read caseboook pp.30-33 (Discovery), through note 1-33 (omit the other notes). Finally, read Rules 56(c) (Supplement) and pp. 34-36 (Summary Judgment).
