Course Outline: This course will introduce students to the law and policy of the United States patent system. This course begins with a discussion of the origin of the patent system followed by a look at the composition of an issued patent and the procedural mechanism for obtaining patent rights. We will then proceed with an examination of the substantive requirements of patentability, including the disclosure requirements, novelty, nonobviousness, utility, and subject matter. Next, we will consider issues associated with enforcing a patent, including the scope of a patent owner’s rights, and the common defenses to a patent infringement suit.

For this instruction mode, instructors and students are expected to normally be physically present in the classroom. If the course has a final examination, it will be in a classroom requiring your physical presence. Other assessment, such as a mid-term exam, may also be in a classroom. Whether this instructor will offer “remote presence” (starting a zoom meeting from the podium computer to enable student remote access on an occasional basis) for part or all of the semester is not known, but students should not rely on an expectation that remote presence will be available.

Prerequisites: - No technical background is required to succeed in this course. There is no prerequisite for this course.
