    SBA President Megan Daic and ABA Representative Nandini Kavuri will proudly represent The University of Houston Law Center on the national stage in Chicago, Illinois in August 2012. The weekend will involve extensive roundtable discussions, lectures, breakout meetings with our districts, and the General Assembly meeting joined by the SBA Presidents and ABA Representatives from most of the law schools in the United States. We are proud to be representing UHLC’s fine reputation outside of Texas!

    SBA was proud to have assisted the Law Student Committee for Less Stress and More Fun in relaunching UHLC’s pastime outdoor festival. On Saturday, UHLC entertained approximately 700 students, faculty, friends, and family for good food, great drinks, fun activities, over $3,000 in raffle prizes, live music, and more.     SBA’s 2012 Barrister’s Ball “A Night of Glitz, Glitter & Glam” entertained approximately 500 law students, friends, and significant others at the Magnolia Hotel downtown Houston. Whether on the dance floor, in the library, in the billiard room, or at the bar, fun was had by all! A huge thanks goes out to our Large Events Coordinator Catherine Zarate for making it a smashing success!

  • A Chat with Career Development

  • ABA Annual Toy Drive

    Well done UHLC!  SBA in conjunction with the Center for Consumer Law helped UHLC raise approximately $7,000 for the Annual Toy Drive delivering much joy to many great families in need.  This year, this drive raised money benefitting the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, the Children's Assessment Center, House of Tiny Treasures, Homes of St. Mark, Star of Hope, Casa De Esperanza, Petersen Elementary, and Woodson Elementary.  A huge thank you goes to Dean Alderman and our ABA Representative Sam Soliz for their hard word and dedication in making this a jolly success!

  • SBA’s Financial Literacy Kick-Off
    November 7, 2011

    SBA kicked off its Financial Literacy Program Monday with Financial Aid Officer Laura Neal discussing “What is happening with your money while in school?”  The lunch hour presentation served as a primer on finances for more than 50 students, most of whom were first-time graduate school borrowers. Topics included the basics of borrowing, the impact of current decisions on the long-term life of student loans, and ways to decrease the financial stresses of law school.  Co-sponsors included the Law Students Assistance Program, Health Law Organization, and Hispanic Law Students Organization.

    SBA’s Financial Literacy Program is a newly created two-part series helping students understand student loans during school and after graduation.  The fall semester event introduces the basics of graduate school loans while in school and the spring semester event focuses on dealing with post-graduation loan issues.

  • “Res BOO-Dicata” Halloween Bash

    SBA’s Halloween Bash drew a crowd of over 500 people to Distllery 2520 for a fun and successful costume party.  A huge congratulation goes out to the Jamaican Bobsled Team for taking home the Best Costume Contest award and bragging rights as the reigning champions for next year’s Halloween.  A huge thanks goes to our Large Events Coordiantor Catherine Zarate for making it a horrifyingly huge success!

  • “What I did my 1L Summer?”
    October 19, 2011

    SBA and the Career Development Office continued the year’s career-focused activities with “What I did my 1L summer?” This event included a panel of eight students discussing what they did and how they went about securing their employment. Students, especially 1Ls, had the opportunity to ask questions about the upcoming months as they plan for their first summer. Panelists included Jeff Adams, Katie Barnhill, Lindsey Blankenau, Nick Floyd, Angeles Garcia, Jim Silliman, Courtney Walsh, and Catherine Zarate. More than 90 students attended the event.

  • “Networking Lunch”
    October 17, 2011

    SBA and the Career Development Office joined forces kicking off the year’s career-focused activities. During the “Networking” lunch, co-hosted by the Houston Young Lawyers Association as part of Career Week, a panel of four attorneys and four students covered topics including networking Do’s and Don’ts, networking opportunities, and what potential employers are looking for in networking situations. More than 70 students attended the event. Panelists included Michael Alexander of W.J. Alexander & Associates P.C., Christine Herron of The Kilburn Law Firm, PLLC, Jason Ryan of CenterPoint Energy, David Walton of Beirne, Maynard & Parsons, L.L.P., and UH Law Center students Garrett Gibson, Ross Hablinski, Poston Pritchett, and Ysa Rodriguez.

The weekend involved extensive roundtable discussions, lectures, breakout meetings with our districts, and the final General Assembly meeting joined by the SBA Presidents and ABA Representatives from most of the law schools in the United States. We were proud to represent UHLC’s fine reputation outside of Texas, and actually, outside the United States!

Halloween Party

The Halloween Party is one of the Law Center’s strongest traditions. Held each fall, several hundred law students attend the event which is held off-campus, usually on a Saturday evening. Wild costumes and fun await what is usually the last major event before the fall final exam season. The party usually features an open bar and admission is free for active SBA members.
