March 30, 2021- Aden Allen, a senior associate attorney at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Austin advised students to be effective communicators and to take pride in their craft during a recent "Dinner with a Lawyer" event hosted by the University of Houston Law Center's Career Development Office. Associate Director for Career Development Chandria Jackson served as the moderator, and Allen was introduced by Dean Leonard M. Baynes.
Allen is a senior associate attorney at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Austin, Allen has worked at his form for more than five years. He is also the president of the Austin Black Lawyer's Association and president of the Austin Intellectual Property Law Association.
"Communication skills are one of the most important to have," Allen said. "It's very important to manage expectations. There might be some questions that you are scared to ask or intimidated by like: 'When does a client needs this by?' Sometimes you need to be able to make your own priorities and make a commitment to doing your best work.
"Really have pride in your workmanship. That's very important to be able to show you enjoy the area of law you're working on. Some people come to Big Law and clock in and clock out, but don't show a willingness to delve into the subject matter."
The Career Development Office hosts Lunch with a Lawyer and Dinner with a Lawyer events, which allows attorneys to have candid conversations with student and recent alumni about their practice areas and employer environments. Campbell's talk was co-sponsored by the Career Development Office and the Intellectual Property Student Organization (IPSO).
