March 30, 2021- A recent graduate of the University of Houston Law Center told students and young alumni to go outside of their comfort zone when networking during a recent webinar hosted by the Career Development Office. Assistant Dean for Career Development Tiffany J. Tucker served as the moderator.
Campbell currently works as a corporate attorney for the U.S. Silica Company. He encouraged attendees to not underestimate the usefulness of social media platforms when seeking contacts or guidance in a job search.
"People post a lot of funny stuff on social media," Campbell said. "I've talked to more people from posting something funny and a conversation develops organically.
"Sometimes on LinkedIn, I would type a paragraph on LinkedIn and reach out to people. Introduce yourself, and let them know you'd like to talk to them over Zoom if they have five minutes of their time. Express your interest in what they do and tell them how much you would like career advice from them. You'll be surprised how many people will talk to you."
The Career Development Office hosts Lunch with a Lawyer and Dinner with a Lawyer events, which allows attorneys to have candid conversations with student and recent alumni about their practice areas and employer environments. Campbell's talk was co-sponsored by the Career Development Office, Black Law Students Association, and the Journal of Commercial & Consumer Law.
