Feb. 9, 2012 -- President Obama has nominated University of Houston Law Center Associate Professor Marcilynn A. Burke to serve as Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management within the Department of the Interior. The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
The assistant secretary provides oversight to the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement and oversees management of public lands and resources, including production of federal energy and mineral resources, both onshore and on the Outer Continental Shelf. She was named acting assistant secretary in July 2011.
Burke took a leave of absence from the Law Center in August 2009 to serve as the Bureau of Land Management Deputy Director for Policy. She joined the Law Center faculty in 2002 and taught environmental law courses on land use and management, natural resources, and property.
