Law Center Professor Michael A. Olivas has been named the 2010 Immigration Professor of the Year by the ImmigrationProf Blog. Olivas, William B. Bates Distinguished Chair in Law and director of the Institute for Higher Education Law and Governance, has written extensively on immigration law. He will serve as president of the Association of American Law Schools for 2011. Olivas is a member of the American Law Institute, the American Bar Foundation, and served as General Counsel to the American Association of University Professors (1994-98). He twice chaired the AALS Section on Immigration Law. Both the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) and The Hispanic Bar Association of Houston have given him awards for lifetime achievement. Since 2002, he has served as a director on the MALDEF Board.
