National protests and racial unrest have engulfed the nation after the death of Houston native and Minneapolis resident George Floyd, who died in police custody while being restrained by an officer's knee for nine minutes. Floyd was a native of the Third Ward, and grew up blocks away from the University of Houston campus. With the advent of video cameras, Floyd's death has not been an isolated incident.
In this space, the University of Houston Law Center seeks to showcase the collective voices of our community. It includes statements from University of Houston President and System Chancellor Dr. Renu Khator, Dean Leonard M. Baynes and a joint statement by the 10 law school deans across Texas, Law Center faculty and numerous student groups.
