Sept. 11, 2020 - In commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, University of Houston Law Center Professor Emeritus Michael A. Olivas will be recognized for his contributions to higher education by the University of New Mexico School of Law.

The Med-Law Virtual Celebration Honoring Latin@ Trailblazers is from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. CST on Sept. 17 via YouTube livestream. Additional sponsors include the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and ReGeneración Colombia.

"Since I retired, I’ve received many Old Guy Awards — which feels unusual, because when I began teaching at UHLC in 1982, I was the youngest faculty member for nine years," Olivas said. "Since I retired to my hometown of Santa Fe, an unexpected recognition by the University of New Mexico is very special."

Olivas, one of the nation’s foremost higher education law authorities, recently retired as the William B. Bates Distinguished Chair in Law and director of the Institute for Higher Education Law & Governance at the Law Center. He is a recognized authority on the intersection of higher education and immigration law and has worked on related legislation in the interest of social justice. A prolific writer, Olivas' most recent book, "Perchance to Dream: A Legal and Political History of the DREAM Act and DACA" was released in June.
