Nov. 5, 2015-- UH Law Center alumnus Tony Buzbee ’97, one of the most successful trial lawyers in the nation, has received top honors from one of the state’s leading legal publications. Texas Lawyer magazine has selected Buzbee as its “2015 Attorney of the Year.”
Buzbee received the award at a banquet held earlier this week. In presenting the professional excellence award, the magazine cited Buzbee’s role as lead counsel in three trials this year that each led to more than $25 million verdicts for clients, including a $159 million award issued by a Houston jury.
“At the same time he has logged those impressive wins, Buzbee has ranked as the top dog on the high-powered criminal defense team for former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is battling a charge of abuse of official capacity,” the magazine noted.
"I became a lawyer to give the powerless a voice against the powerful. But, over many years of law practice, I have learned that injustice is blind, and have been called upon to represent those from every walk of life, including the largest corporations. I am truly honored to be chosen as Attorney of the Year by the leading legal publication in Texas. There are more than 25,000 lawyers in Texas, and Texas is known to have the best legal talent in the United States. God willing, I will continue to be someone who stands for those who are wronged," Buzbee said.
A former Marine Corps infantry officer in the first Gulf War and U.S. operations in Somalia, Buzbee graduated from Texas A&M University with a B.S. degree in psychology before going on to UHLC. He graduated summa cum laude and served as managing editor of the Houston Law Review.
