Renu Khator, president of the University of Houston and chancellor of the UH System, was one of three noteworthy immigrants honored on Thursday, Nov. 12, at the 2009 Arrival Awards program.  The annual event recognizes the achievements of immigrants and benefits the Immigration Clinic at the University of Houston Law Center.  Ayaz Nasser, president of the Zenith Real Estate Group of America; and Y. Ping Sun, of counsel at Yetter, Warden & Coleman, LLP, and First Lady of Rice University, also were honored.

Khator is a native of India while Nasser is from Pakistan and Sun from Shanghai.

The Arrival Awards recognize the successes and benefits that immigrants bring to the community and nation in general. Proceeds from the awards dinner benefit the Law Center’s Immigration Clinic which assists hundreds of immigrants and refugees who could not otherwise find legal representation. It also serves as a vital, hands-on teaching laboratory for aspiring lawyers.

The evening included a tribute to the late Prof. Joseph A. Vail, founding director of the Immigration Clinic.

The event was held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Rice Lofts in downtown Houston.
