I am pleased to note that the outstanding profession achievement of our Law Center graduates has been recognized by the legal community, this time in an annual survey of peers ranking the best lawyers in the state. Nearly 1,100 of our alumni have been cited as "Super Lawyers" or "Rising Stars" based on polling by Super Lawyer magazine. This figure is remarkable when you consider the Law Center has graduated only about 13,000 lawyers since the school was founded in 1947 and that most of these graduates have been in the later portions of our history. Super Lawyers and their generally younger counterparts, Rising Stars, are selected through a multi-phased process, including independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations. These attorneys are the best in their fields; the most highly regarded by their colleagues for their legal skill, knowledge, and professional achievement. Among the list of Super Lawyers are many ardent supporters of the Law Center, including the current and past presidents of the UH Law Alumni Association and UH Law Foundation – Bill Jackson (92), William D. “Willie” Wood (84) , Warren W. Harris (88) and Jim M. Perdue, Jr. (93). UH Law Alumni Association board members Susan L. Bickley (84) and Laura Gibson (85) are also among the list. And if I might add, I have been named Houston’s 2012 “Lawyer of the Year” in the field of Information Technology Law in a survey conducted by Best Lawyers in America, and that Tracy Hester, the Director of our Energy and Environmental Law Program and a Visiting Assistant Professor at UHLC received a similar recognition in the area of environmental law. I salute all the UHLC Super Lawyers and Rising Stars as well as the outstanding faculty and staff that helped them to attain this distinction. RTN |
