James E. Daily & Ryan M. Davidson. The law of superheroes. Gotham Books, 2012. K487.L38D35 2012 In The Law of Superheroes, attorneys James Daily and Ryan Davidson explore the hypothetical legal ramifications of comic book tropes, characters, and powers down to the most deliciously trivial detail. The Law of Superheroes asks and answers crucial speculative questions about everything from constitutional law and criminal procedure to taxation, intellectual property, and torts. Engaging, accessible, and teaching readers about the law through fun hypotheticals, The Law of Superheroes is a must-read for legal experts, comic nerds, and anyone who will ever be called upon to practice law in the comic multiverse.
John Barylick. Killer show : The Station nightclub fire, America's deadliest rock concert. University Press of New England, 2012. F89.W4B37 2012 On February 20, 2003, the deadliest rock concert in U.S. history took place at a roadhouse called The Station in West Warwick, Rhode Island. That night the fate of many of the unsuspecting nightclub patrons was determined with awful certainty. The blaze was ignited when pyrotechnics set off by Great White, a 1980s heavy-metal band, lit flammable polyurethane “egg crate” foam sound insulation on the club’s walls. In less than 10 minutes, 96 people were dead and 200 more were injured, many catastrophically. The story of the fire, its causes, and its legal and human aftermath is one of lives put at risk by petty economic decisions—by a band, club owners, promoters, building inspectors, and product manufacturers. Authored by John Barylick, a lead attorney investigating and prosecuting cases arising from The Station fire, Killer Show delves into the tort principles and Rhode Island statutes that formed the basis of the prosecutions. |
