education of undocumented schoolchildren. New York University Press,

2012 This book, written by Professor Michael Olivas, discusses
the 1982 U.S. Supreme Court case of Plyler v. Doe, which made it
possible for undocumented children to enroll in Texas public schools. It
tells a fascinating history of the landmark case, examining how, 30 years
later, it continues to suffer from implementation issues and requires
additional litigation and vigilance to enforce the ruling. The book also
takes a comprehensive look at the legal regime it established regarding the
education of undocumented school children, moves up through its
implementation, including direct and indirect attacks on it, and closes with
the ongoing, highly charged debates over the Development, Relief, and
Education for Minors (DREAM) Act. |

2011 The first decade of the new millennium was bookended by two major economic crises. The bursting of the dotcom bubble and the extended bear market of 2000 to 2002 prompted Congress to pass the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. At the end of the decade came the bursting of the housing bubble, followed by a severe credit crunch, and the worst economic downturn in decades. In response, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Act. This book asks two questions about these changes. First, are they a good idea that will improve corporate governance? Second, what do they tell us about the relative merits of the federal government and the states as sources of corporate governance regulation? |
