This book is edited by Michael Olivas, the William B. Bates Distinguished Chair of Law and Director of the Institute for Higher Education Law and Governance at the University of Houston Law Center. This title commemorates the 50th anniversary of the famous U.S. Supreme court case, Hernandez v. Texas, 347 US 475 (1954) which held that Mexican Americans were a protected group under the Fourteenth Amendment equal protection clause. This case was largely about prohibiting discrimination in state jury selection but has been cited as precedent by subsequent civil rights cases. The chronology of the case and trial briefs are included as well as the papers presented at the Hernandez at 50 Conference held at the University of Houston Law Center in 2004.

Specific topics include mediation from beginning to end, mediation in context, and the dynamics of power in child custody mediation. Other topics include premediation strategies to deal with strong emotions, developing a conflict-positive organization, emotion in mediation, and a face work frame for mediation.
