This book is co-authored by Professor Peter Hoffman. He is the Newell H. Blakely Chair in Evidence and Director of the Blakely Advocacy Institute at the University of Houston Law Center. The Effective Deposition focuses on mastering deposition skills for the courtroom. This edition contains the 2000 amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure which deal with discovery, requirements for mandatory disclosures and length of depositions. Some of the topics covered include the mechanics of taking depositions, questioning techniques, style, using documents, preparing the witness, scheduling, defending depositions, and deposing experts.

This book provides criticism and analysis of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the problems that have resulted. The author discusses the concept of separation of powers as it relates to this act, includes a brief history of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and an overview of The Telecommunications Act of 1996. A Tough Act to Follow also covers other issues such as the Supreme Court’s refusal to allow the courts to provide oversight over the FCC and the inability of congress to discipline the agency. Finally, problems of discriminatory treatment, sloppy rulemaking, and uncertainty of the FCC are also investigated.
