This book is an update to Murder in Mississippi which focused on the unsolved murders of civil rights workers Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner in Nes County, Mississippi. Howard Ball provides an explanation of the trial and conviction of Edgar Ray Killen. He discusses the weight of the evidence against Killen including what could not be introduced at trial. He articulates the causes of the crime such as the social and cultural roots as well as the barriers that provided immunity to those who committed violent racial acts. Finally, this book covers the progressive changes in Mississippi’s culture that allowed this case to be reopened and Killen to be eventually tried and convicted.

David S. Caudill and Lewis H. LaRue in this book discuss the problems created by judges who lack scientific knowledge. This deficiency has had grave consequences including the fact that skilled attorneys have been able to lure courts into admitting questionable evidence. This dilemma has also resulted in judges refusing to allow scientifically sound evidence. The authors articulate the importance of striking a balance between the two extremes of unreasonable deference and rejecting reliable evidence. This book also includes an overview of the types of judges who are either too strict or gullible and includes chapters that discuss science as a pragmatic activity as well as science studies for law.
