Courtiers of the Marble Palace: The Rise and Influence of the Supreme Court Law Clerk, by Todd C. Peters, reviews the gradual transformation of the role of the U.S. Supreme Court Law from glorified legal secretaries in late 19th century to influential parts of the Court’s decision writing teams. Graphics illustrate and compare law clerks’ responsibilities under various justices throughout history. The book examines the professional and personal relationships that various Justices developed with their clerks. The author’s research didn’t find any clear evidence of a clerk changing the outcome of a court’s decision. The facts do demonstrate that the law clerk’s role has risen in stature, importance, and influence over the last 120 years.
