Merry HQ1237.M47 2006 In her concluding chapter, the author aptly sums up the problem of the translation she explores in her book. She says that there is a paradox in the process of “making human rights in the vernacular: in order to be accepted, they have to be tailored to the local context and resonate with the local cultural framework. However, in order to be part of the human rights system, they must emphasize individualism, autonomy, choice, bodily integrity, and equality, ideas embedded in the legal documents that constitute human rights law. These core values of the human rights system endure even as the ideas are translated. Whether this is the most effective approach to diminishing violence against women or promoting global social justice is still an open question.”

of information, maximization of leverage, employment of objective criteria,
design of offer-concession plan, and control of agenda. In part one he
discusses each rule, in part two he discusses ways to make the rules work
for the negotiator, and in part three he shows how the rules can be applied
in specific situations. The author states that “it’s critical to understand
the guiding principles that permeate the entire negotiation process.”
Once understood and honed, the principles and skills can be applied to
one’s personal life as well as in the most complex legal venue.
