Peri Bearman,
Rudolph Peters, Frank E. Vogel; Editors KBP250.I84 2005 Mostly a selection of papers
from the Third International Conference on Islamic Legal Studies, held
May 4-6, 2000 at Harvard Law School, this volume exemplifies the innovative
thinking on the concept of madhhab, the Islamic school of law. With producing
a new history of Islamic law and legal institutions the goal, the papers
cover the background to madhhab formation, the drive to establish legal
authority, inter-and intra-madhhab differences, anti madhhab tendencies,
the relationship between the madhhab and the State and the jurisdictional
authorities of each , and the trend in modern times away from affiliations
with madhhabs. Readers not well versed in the early development of the
Islamic law and the madhhab should start with the preface of the book.

Z. Oya Ozcayir, foreword by E.E. Mitropoulos Port State Control, 2nd edition, LLP, 2004. KZA1470.O93 2004 Although the prime
responsibility for implementation of agreed standards rests with flag
states and shipping companies, for years the maritime world has recognized
the importance and the value of port State Control as a means of supporting
and providing back-up to the role of flag States. The International Maritime
Organization has encouraged the establishment of regional port State control
organizations and agreements as a means of ensuring compliance of its
conventions. This book is a comprehensive publication dealing with the
full implications and regulations of port State control, including the
most recent developments in this area. It covers not only the regional
agreements on port State control and the European Union legislation on
the subject, but also the background of the port State control process,
its implications in practice and its effect on the International Safety
Management Code and the classification societies. With the amendments
and updates to the various agreements, procedures, and systems, and appendices
and tables on all relevant legislation, this second edition indeed is
a valuable source of reference. |
