Richard Alderman's books, "Alderman's Texas Consumer and Commercial Law Annotated, 1998 edition" and "Texas Consumer Law: Cases and Materials were published this summer. West Group published the former: the latter was published by Grail and Tucker. He also submitted the manuscript to Lexis Law Publishing for the Fall 1998 Supplement to "The Lawyer's Guide to the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act." He spoke at the Advanced Consumer and Insurance Law Seminar sponsored by the State Bar and provided pro-bono representation to the Center for the Study of Services in a case involving a charge of unlawful automobile brokering.
Tony Chase was a featured speaker at Columbia University's Institute for Tele-Information Conference, Columbia Law School, "Minority Ownership in the Telecom Industry" on July 27-28th. He also spoke at the National Convention of the National Association of Black Journalists held in Washington, DC on July 31st.
John Jay Douglass was a panelist on "Ethical Problems for Government and Public Sector Lawyers" at the ABA convention in Toronto.
Sandra Guerra's treatise (co-authored with Jimmy Gurule of Notre Dame Law School) "The Law of Asset Forfeiture" was published in June by Lexis Law Publishing.
Laura Rothstein's letter, "Americans with Disabilities" was published in U.S.News &World Report, August 17/August 24, 1998, BC-51.
Mark Rothstein's letter, "HMO Liability is Worth the Cost" was published in the Wall Street Journal, Tuesday, August 11, 1998, A18. His book "Genetic Secrets: Protecting Privacy and Confidentiality in the Genetic Era" Yale University Press, 1997 was reviewed by J. Stephen Bamforth, University of Alabama in 38 New England Journal of Medicine 135, July 9th and by Charles H. Sanders in 11 Harvard Journal of Law & Technology 865.
Ira Shepard spoke on "Recent Developments in Federal Income Taxation" to the American Institute on Federal Taxation in Birmingham for the seventh consecutive year on June 17th and on the same topic to the Denver Tax Institute, July 23rd for the nineteenth consecutive year. He also spoke on "Current Developments in Federal Taxation" to the Wednesday Tax Forum in June and July.
