Welcome to the Friends of HLPI

The Friends of HLPI organization unites University of Houston Law Center (UHLC) alumni and practicing health law attorneys who are dedicated to supporting UHLC’s Health Law & Policy Institute (HLPI). Our mission is to create a supportive network that encourages connection, collaboration, and professional growth. In partnership with HLPI and UHLC, we provide mentoring for health law students and recent graduates, support the Houston Journal of Health Law & Policy, promote networking opportunities, and contribute to fundraising efforts to maintain HLPI’s excellence.

About Friends of HLPI

Friends of HLPI and the University of Houston Law Center Professional Mentoring Program pairs J.D. and LL.M. students with health law attorneys to aid with the transition to practice. Mentors in the program make a one-year commitment to their assigned mentee(s) to offer assistance with the varied aspects of professional development, including choosing a career path, networking, their job search, and learning how to execute an effective career plan. Mentors may specify how many students they would like to be assigned (up to 3). To the extent possible, students are matched with mentors based on their practice areas of interest, law firm/organization preference, or demographic preference (ex. diverse attorney, first-generation attorney, LGBTQ+ attorney, etc.).

The University of Houston Law Center Professional Mentoring Program begins its official activities with a kickoff event every Fall semester. This year’s event offers mentors and mentees the opportunity to interact and network in a virtual environment before the matching process. The UHLC Professional Mentoring Program’s Virtual Kickoff Event will take place on September 24, 2025, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

If you are interested in participating in the UHLC Professional Mentoring Program, please register no later than Friday, September 19th, by completing the registration form.
