About the Challenge
Legal education and students are facing a new and challenging landscape during these unprecedented times. For many students, the generosity of others will enable them to continue their studies during such times of financial uncertainty and hardship.
The 100% Giving Challenge is a meaningful way for your organization to help support legal education, students, and innovative learning in a new era. To participate, 100% of the Houston Law Alumni at your office contribute to the Law Fund or the Cougar Emergency Fund for Law Students during the fiscal year, which starts September 1, 2019 and runs through August 31, 2020. Firms with 4 or more alumni are encouraged to join.
Your Impact
Shortly after completing their legal educations in 2018, University of Houston Law Center graduates Hannah Melcer and Timothy Sullivan established Melcer & Sullivan PLLC in Galveston. However, starting a solo practice fresh out of law school is easier said than done, which is where the Career Development Office's UHLC Solo Incubator Program came into play.
"We had some trepidations, and the Solo Incubator Program gave us the push we needed. It helped in making the decision to start the firm. If you're a recent graduate wondering what to do, the Incubator Program is definitely something alumni should use as a resource." Read more about how the Law Fund supported Hannah and Timothy here.
The Law Fund supports the Dean’s priorities for the Law Center, including student scholarships, career service programs, student organizations, faculty recruitment and retention, and much more. These critical dollars make for a richer experience for all members of the UHLC Community. The Cougar Emergency Fund for Law Students provides assistance to currently-enrolled students who have an extraordinary financial need or who find themselves dealing with a personal or family emergency which would otherwise delay their legal education at UHLC.
Recognition & Benefits
Those who achieve 100% participation in giving back by alumni at their organization will be prominently displayed in the Law Center near the Career Development Office and will be published in major UHLC publications. All organizations and captains that participate in the Challenge will also be published in major UHLC publications.
