Course Outline: The general admiralty course will be a general survey of maritime law, covering a number of its unique features such as limitation of liability, general average, salvage, cargo claims, the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act and variations thereon under international conventions, and seamen's remedies for personal injuries including the Jones Act, unseaworthiness and maintenance and cure. It will also focus on federal jurisdiction issues that come into play in admiralty, including in rem and quasi in rem jurisdiction, and the interplay between state and federal jurisdiction under the Savings to Suitors Clause. Whether or not one ever anticipates practicing maritime law to any great extent, the intent is that the student will come away with a much better understanding of federal jurisdiction and its impact on litigation practice generally.
