Course Outline: This course serves as an introduction to the rapidly expanding area of international human rights law. The concept, foundations, and sources for human rights law will be covered as well as the avenues for having governments adopt and respect such rights. The enforcement of human rights laws domestically, in both civil and criminal cases, and regionally and internationally, through intergovernmental institutions, will be studied. A special focus of the course will be the developing area of responsibility for the protection of human rights by multinational corporations and intergovernmental economic institutions, such as the World Bank and the World Trade Organization.

Prerequisites:  

First Day Assignments: Read pages 1-32 in the text and skim through and become acquainted with i) the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ii) the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, and iii) the 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in the supplement to the text.
