Course Outline: This course provides an overview of employment in non-unionized, private sector workplaces by examining common law doctrines and statutes that regulate the employment relationship. Specific topics include employment at will, wrongful discharge, breach of contract, discrimination, privacy, wages and hours, workplace injury, post-employment issues, and arbitration.

Course Notes: I recommend – but do not require – that students buy Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed.
Prerequisites:
First Day Assignments: The casebook is by Rothstein & Liebman, Employment Law, Cases and Materials (6th ed. 2007). A supplementary work by Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed, is recommended; it provides insight on the problems of those who work for low wages. It is best to read this book as the semester begins.
Your assignment for the first day is to read the introductory chapter, pages 1-33, and be prepared to discuss the beneficial and negative consequences of working and the default rule of employment at will.
