Course Outline: This course looks at the status, rights and obligations of children in the United States, the representation of children in various types of cases including child welfare, foster care, and medical decision-making.

First Day Assignments: Children and the Law
August 28th - In Children and the Law we will discuss how the legal system affects the
lives of children. In this context, think about how you define children as a group, and if
that definition should apply the same to children in every context. Several Supreme
Court cases are viewed as defining the interests and rights of children. We will begin our
discussion by considering some early Supreme Court decisions and how they shaped
the way the legal system views children. Read pages 1 - 36.
August 30th - Read pages 36 - 65.
