Summer 2014 Schedule

Summer I ( June 2- August 15)
Summer II ( June 2- July 8)
Summer IV ( July 9- August 15)

Summer Classes
For the Summer 2014 schedule you will see that there are more classes offered than we usually offer in the first short session (Summer II- from June 2-July 8) and in the second short session (Summer IV-from July 9-Aug 15). The opportunity to take more classes in the summer may help some students graduate early; others may find that taking summer classes helps reduce their load for the fall and spring. In addition to the courses offered in these two abbreviated sessions, there are also numerous clinical offerings that you can take all summer long (Summer I).

While you cannot be enrolled in two classes in the same short summer session, you can do a judicial internship or an externship and simultaneously be enrolled in a class in the same short session. For example, in Summer IV you could do an internship with a judge for 3 credits and also be enrolled in Professional Responsibility with Professor Duncan.  You also can be enrolled in a clinic for the full summer and simultaneously take a class in one or both of the abbreviated summer sessions. For example, you can take Transactional Clinic I with Professor Bachari for 4 credits for the entire summer (Summer I) and also register to take E-Discovery with Professor Chaumette in Summer II.

The New “WRS” and “WRC” Prefixes for Upper Level Writing Classes
These new prefixes designate classes that satisfy the Upper Level Writing Requirement.  Starting in Summer 2014, all UHLC students can enroll in either a WRS or WRC classes. Show More

As explained below, however, for next academic year different registration priorities will apply to these two classes as we transition from what was called the “Senior Writing Requirement” to the new “Upper Level Writing Requirement.”  Note that any student who matriculated before Fall 2013 still has the option of satisfying the writing requirement by doing a comment or note for a journal.

A WRS class (a “Writing Seminar”) is a traditional seminar. Students in a Writing Seminar must complete a paper that is original and demonstrates the student’s research and writing skills. Regardless of credit hours, the final version of the paper must be at least 10,000 words, including footnotes. Instructors may require longer papers.  WRS classes will remain (as they are now) as priority registration for 3L students.

A WRC class (a “Writing Course”) is a new kind of course that will satisfy the Upper Level Writing Requirement. Students in a Writing Course must complete several kinds of practical writing assignments. These may be expository exercises (e.g., drafting client letters, research memoranda, court documents, and short articles similar to those that appear in bar journals) or transactional or litigation drafting assignments (e.g., contracts and other business agreements, wills or other estate planning instruments, pleadings, and discovery documents). Assignments must be no more than 2,500 words each, when feasible. Instructors have discretion over the kind and number of assignments students complete; however, students must complete at least 5,000 words of writing over the course of the semester. WRC classes will be priority registration for those students who matriculated in Fall 2013 (that is, all students who will be full-time 2L students in Fall 2014).  Part time students who began in Fall 2013 will have priority registration for any WRC or WRS designated class offered in the evening (as they have priority registration for all evening classes).

This approach to registration will remain through Spring 2015. Starting in Summer 2015, we will revert back to priority registration for 3L students for all WRS and WRC classes.
