UHLC Pro Bono Volunteer Initiative
Program Goals and Purpose
As a premier public urban law school, the University of Houston Law Center naturally emphasizes social responsibility and public service. As an outgrowth of these values, the Dean’s Council, as representatives of UHLC students, has created the Pro Bono Volunteer Initiative Program. We recognize that a successful, well-rounded life includes contributions to the community through public service. The purpose of this initiative is to encourage our student body to give back to the surrounding Houston community. In this way, we will be helping others, educating ourselves about the needs of our neighbors, and creating life habits of public service.
The program documents and collects information on existing volunteer contributions made by students and staff that presently go unrecognized. To encourage involvement of those not currently committed to organizations, we will provide links and information on groups with volunteer needs. We hope the Pro Bono Volunteer Initiative will ignite a passion for service in our students that grows into a commitment to pro bono work in our alumni.
The faculty approved this program on December 19, 2003.

Harris County Long-Term Care Staff Ombudsman Program
5/31/2008
The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program was federally mandated in the 1978 Older American's Act. Ombudsmen volunteers serve as advocates for residents living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities and work to help them resolve issues or complaints pertaining to health, safety, welfare, dignity, quality of life, and resident rights. In Harris County, there are over 70 nursing homes and 200 assisted living facilities, and with only four staff ombudsman, our program relies heavily on the volunteers we train to become Texas Certified Ombudsmen.
To become a Certified Volunteer Ombudsman, classroom training and field work is required, and after certification, 12 hours of continuing education annually. Once the initial training session is completed, the volunteer is assigned one facility in their preferred area and will serve as an ombudsman intern before being certified by the State of Texas. An ombudsman visits a nursing facility approximately 6 hours per month (you determine your own schedule) and files reports monthly. Staff ombudsmen are always available to consult with and provide ongoing support to all volunteers.
