UHLC PUBLIC INTEREST ADVISING RESOURCES

Links to On-Line Placement Resources.Here you will find links to sites that post available public interest positions and/or locate government and non-profit organizations. In particular, the Law Center has subscriptions to the valuable PSLAWNET and Equal Justice Works sites.

Public Interest Job Search Handbook. This is a great resource for those seeking information on what a public interest career entails as well as those who are interested in applying for public interest jobs. (cougarnet login required)

Public Interest Law Week. Every spring we invite the law center community to spend a week focusing on public interest careers. In partnership with the Public Interest Law Organization, we arrange a variety of lunch-time speakers to give students exposure to a wide-range of public interest fields and opportunities and close the week with a Public Interest Employer Table Talk.

Public Interest Table Talk. At the end of public interest law week, UHLC hosts a table talk fair for students to meet local public interest employers who seek law students to work as externs or fellows.

Participation in Public Interest Job Fairs.UHLC students can participate in the Equal Justice Works Career Fair and the UT Public Service Career Day.

Harvard Law School Specialty Guides. Harvard Law School publishes several guides that provide valuable information to students about public interest careers.

Individual Counseling. Counselors are available in the Career Development Office to provide guidance in your job search.

National Summer Funding Resources.Information on available summer funding for public interest internships.

Finding and Funding International Public Service Opportunities. An article available on the PSLAWNET Webpage.

E-Guide to Public Service at America's Law Schools. A resource for those seeking information about public interest programs and curricula, financial considerations, and public service at law schools.

Fellowship/Public Interest Publications. Dean Beassie and the Career Development Office have several helpful books and pamphlets such as Harvard’s Serving The Public: Job Search Guide and EJW’s Lawful Pursuit: Careers in Public Interest Law. These publications provide career/fellowship planning tips and specific public interest contact information.

For information on a specific firm’s pro bono involvement, see The Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge which is a list of law firms who have committed to devote three or five percent of their billable hours or 60 or 100 hours per attorney annually to the provision of pro bono legal services.
