Public Interest Law

UHLC 2012 Graduate Fellowships
As part of the Professional Development Program for the Class of 2012, the University of Houston Law Center is expanding its highly successful program for short-term Public Interest Fellowships for our recent graduates.
Under the expanded program announced by Dean Ray Nimmer, the Law Center will provide up to $4,000 to a limited number of recent graduates selected for a Public Interest Fellowship with a government agency or a 501(c)(3) public interest organization. Work schedules are flexible, but most fellows are expected to work twenty hours a week for ten weeks beginning the last week in August and conclude the first week in November.
How do I apply for the fellowship?
The application is a three-step process: (1) prior to arranging placement, schedule a Graduate Fellowship meeting with Assistant Dean, Allison Regan by May 18, 2012 (schedule appointments here) . You will meet with the Assistant Dean and the public interest advisor, Bhavika Shah, in Career Development to discuss placement options relevant to your career goals; (2) apply, gain approval, and have your organization submit the Agency Agreement by June 8, 2012; and (3) email your application and resume to Anna Julia in the Career Development Office also by June 8, 2012.
Once the fellowship committee approves an application, the applicant must meet with the agency for their signature of the Bar Card Application within ten days (assuming the placement is representation oriented). Graduate Fellows are responsible for paying the $10.00 fee to the State Bar for their temporary license and for mailing the application. The applicant must return the Agreement to Participate Form to Career Development and execute any other required documents to secure/process the funds.
Public Interest Employers
To help public interest organizations identify the best candidates, AT NO COST TO YOU, please register the position type as a 2012 Graduate Fellowship in our online Job Bank or contact Anna Julia at 713-743-2090. Once posted, graduates will begin applying directly to your organization. Employers review, interview, and select their fellows. Please then notify both the graduate and the career office of your selection.
Started in 2006, our program offers an opportunity that gives Law Center graduates a chance to help public interest organizations while adding a new layer of legal experience to their portfolio of skills.
