The Advocates

Advocates at University of Houston

The Advocates is the University of Houston Law Center’s student organization devoted to improving students’ oral advocacy presentation skills through competition. Each year The Advocates host intramural moot court, mock trial, and alternative dispute resolution competitions to give students at UHLC opportunities to develop and practice invaluable skills used by practicing attorneys.

The Advocates host competitions in:

  • Negotiation
  • Mediation
  • Mock Trial
  • Moot Court
  • Arbitration

UHLC students who compete in Advocates competitions are eligible to earn course credit toward their degree.  Additionally, the Champions and Finalists of each competition receive a cash prize.

Thank You to Our Donors

1L Students

University of Houston Law Center 1L students play an important role in the Advocates program.  1Ls are eligible to compete in all Advocates competitions.  Additionally, the John Black Moot Court Competition is limited to teams composed of only 1Ls.  Each section also elects two Advocates Section Representatives to serve on the Board of Advocates and assist with event publicity, competitor signups, as well as act as in-round bailiffs during competitions.

2L and 3L Students

University of Houston Law Center 2L and 3L students are eligible to compete in all competitions except the John Black Moot Court Competition.  2Ls and 3Ls may also run for positions on the Board of Advocates as either an Executive or Associate Board Member.  2Ls and 3Ls who serve on the Board of Advocates are eligible to receive course credit for their service.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any Board of Advocates member by e-mail, phone, or stop by the Advocates’ office.

Alumni and Community Supporters

Each year judges and attorneys from the Houston legal community volunteer their time to serve as judges in Advocates Competitions.  The Advocates organization is grateful for their continuing support, and we could not accomplish our mission without it.  Serving as a volunteer judge is a great opportunity to see the budding talent at UHLC and to network with other professionals in the community.  If you're interested in serving as a judge please contact James Dorough-Lewis, The Advocates Executive Chair.

Competition and Event Sponsorship
