Jayson Booth and Sara Waller, both 3Ls, sorted out a muddled Hurricane Ike insurance claim to take top honors in the annual Blakely Butler Moot Court Competition sponsored by The Advocates. Waller also won the “Best Speaker” award. The other finalists were Tesha Robaszkiewicz and Erin Stanley, also 3Ls. The case involved a disputed claim for wind and water damage caused by Hurricane Ike but strayed into marital discord, illicit sex and hints of “dirt” and “bad blood” among some of the principals. Judges for the final round were 1st Court of Appeals Chief Justice Sherry Radack, U.S. District Court Judge Lee Rosenthal, and U.S. District Bankruptcy Court Judge Jeff Bohm. In her critique, Justice Radack complimented the contestants on their thorough preparation and called the students “a beautiful, inspiring group of young people.”
