SCOTEX Chief Justice urges students to exceed expectations
The Honorable Wallace Jefferson, Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, urged Law Center students to go beyond expectations -- their own and those of others -- as they strive for career accomplishments. Chief Justice Jefferson delivered an inspiring keynote address at the annual Black Law Student Association Scholarship Banquet, and emphasized how the ability to “accomplish” should not be hampered by someone’s background. He cited one example: an ancestor who rose from slavery to become a city councilman. Chief Justice Jefferson twice made history when he became the first African-American justice on the state’s highest court, and subsequently became its first African-American chief justice. He was appointed to the Texas Supreme Court by Gov. Rick Perry in 2001 and won election in 2002 before the governor named him chief justice in 2004.
