Bruhl elected to American Law Institute

Oct. 22, 2014 – UHLC associate professor Aaron Bruhl was named today as one of 50 new members of the prestigious American Law Institute.

The Institute is made up of exceptional judges, lawyers and legal academics from all states and the District of Columbia, along with international members. Sixteen current members of the UHLC faculty, along with several other adjunct or emeritus faculty, are also among its members. ALI’s total membership is 4,448.

“It’s an honor to join this organization of which many of my distinguished colleagues are already members. I look forward to contributing to the Institute’s work in the years to come,” Bruhl said.

UHLC professor Michael A. Olivas, who served on the ALI committee that recommended lawyers for membership for nearly a dozen years, said that only "triple threats" -- persons who had excellent academic achievement, prominence as lawyers, and excellent service to the community and bar -- are named to membership of the ALI.

Professor Bruhl presently teaches and writes on statutory interpretation, federal courts, and the legislative process. His scholarly publications have appeared in journals such as the University of Chicago Law Review, the Cornell Law Review, the Michigan Law Review, and the NYU Law Review.

Professor Bruhl, who is the George Butler Research Professor at UH, received his J.D. degree from Yale Law School. While at Yale, he served as Book Reviews Editor of the Yale Law Journal and also worked on the Yale Law & Policy Review and the Yale Journal of Law & the Humanities. Professor Bruhl also holds a master’s degree in political theory from the University of Cambridge.

The mission of the American Law Institute, based in Philadelphia, is to produce scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law. The Institute drafts, discusses, revises, and publishes Restatements of the Law, model statutes, and principles of law that are influential in the courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education.
