Oct. 13, 2014 – The University of Houston Law Center community is mourning the loss of Darold E. Maxwell. A full-time faculty member from 1979-81 and later long-time adjunct, Maxwell passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7.
A favorite among his students, Maxwell taught taxation business and commercial law. He practiced federal income tax planning, real estate, and business law with an emphasis on structuring complex business transactions to protect clients and minimize taxes.
Darold graduated from the University of California in Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Economics in 1969, and received his J.D. from Harvard University in 1972. Darold spent his final days doing what he loved, practicing law at Maxwell & Maxwell.
During most of his adult life, Darold participated in racquetball, softball, and touch football, but his passion as a sailor led him to travel across the waters along with his wife and friends. Darold and Joyce, his wife of 28 years, enjoyed racing and sailing on boats Whiffler and Moonstruck. Joyce took sabbaticals and sailed with their 10-year-old, Austin, from Houston to Baltimore and throughout the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Windward Islands and Leeward Islands.
Darold was preceded in death by his parents, Eldon and Bessie Maxwell, and his sister, Debbie Maxwell. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Lurie Maxwell of Bacliff, Texas, and step-son, W. Austin Welsh and wife, Valerie Finger, of Austin, Texas.
