Baynes welcomed as new dean of UH Law Center

Sept. 10, 2014 -- The University of Houston community, alumni and friends of the Law Center turned out in force Tuesday evening to greet new Dean Leonard M. Baynes.

Baynes, who assumed his duties in August, mingled with UH Systems Chancellor and President Renu Khator, board Trustee and Law Center alumnus Jarvis V. Hollingsworth, former student Trustee Ben Wells, alumni, judges, lawyers, and family members at the reception at the Hotel ZaZa near Hermann Park.  Provost Paula Myrick Short presented Baynes with a crystal gavel.

In brief remarks, the new dean elaborated on his personal theme of “The Power of Legal Education,” which he explained opens the doors to endless opportunities to help transform society and the world while seeking justice for those in need.

Baynes came to the Law Center from St. John’s University School of Law in New York where he taught and served as the inaugural director of the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development. He is a nationally recognized communications law scholar with specializations in business, media, and diversity issues.

Future receptions will be held in Austin on Sept. 17; San Antonio, Sept. 18; Dallas, Oct. 1; and New York, Oct. 8.
