Nov. 11, 2013 – A University of Houston Law Center team beat 23 other teams to win the five-state regional ABA Negotiation Competition this past weekend and will go on to the national competition in Chicago next Spring.

Niki Roberts, a 4L in the evening program, and Brandon Schrecengost 2L are part of the ADR Interscholastic Competition Team and have been preparing for this competition for the past eight weeks.  Region 8 comprises law school teams from Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah.

“Niki and Brandon’s competition rounds seemed effortless, which demonstrates the true value of their prior preparation and hard work,” said Jim Lawrence, Director of the Blakely Advocacy Institute and a team coach.

The preparation process includes researching the legal and business issues in the competition problems and practicing against other ADR team members two or three times a week.  The teams are guided by ADR coaches, all of whom are Law Center alums, who give their time and expertise to work with the students.   In addition to Lawrence, team coaches are Kevin Hedges, Tesha Peeples, Lucy Tyson, and Tamara Woods.  Lawrence singled out Tyson for special recognition for her work with the winning team.
